It's #YoungCarerAwarenessDay on the 30th of January, a day dedicated to raising awareness of young carers and campaigning for better recognition and support for young carers and their needs.
Of course, at YACbook, this is a day we are particularly passionate about! Although YACbook is aimed at young adult carers from 16-25, we have a dedicated young carer website here. On the website you can find information for young carers, parents and professionals.
Recent research shows that one in five secondary school children may be a young carer. And although looking after someone might be something they have always done, caring for someone can be very isolating, worrying and stressful. For young carers, this can negatively impact on their experiences and outcomes in education, having a lasting effect on their life chances. A lot of young adult carers we support have already been caring for many years with no support, so we want to change that and get in earlier so that young people are supported before they reach breaking point.
This year we are in schools across Wiltshire raising awareness of young carers and calling on schools and colleges to become young carer aware. Follow us on our social media pages to see more of what we're doing on the day.
